【Other name】 Cyperus rotundus, Dryopteris chinensis

[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of European Dryopteris, a plant of the Dryopteris family.

【Original morphology】 Plant height 60-100cm. The rhizome is thick, erect or oblique, hard, and together with the base of the petiole, is densely covered with gray-brown, broad-lanceolate scales. Leaves are clustered; petiole 15-30cm long, upper scales narrowly lanceolate; leaf blade thick papery, ovate-lanceolate, 40-70cm long, 20-30cm wide, short acuminate, pinnae on both sides and rachis covered with dark brown, lanceolate membranous scales, bipinnately divided or deeply divided; pinnae lanceolate, acuminate at apex, 2-4cm wide, deeply divided to rachis; lobes densely packed, pure head, entire or serrated; lower pinnae bipinnate; pinnules slightly elongated; veins bifurcated. The sporangium is large, dorsally arranged in 1-3 rows on both sides of the midrib; the sori is round and kidney-shaped with a deep concave part.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows in the shade and wet places under the forest.

【Chemical composition】 The rhizome contains paraaspidin, albaspidin, filixic acid, flavaspidic acid (also known as flavaspidic acid BB), desaspidin BB, aspidinol, tridecane, tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecane, 1-heptadecene, 2,6-di-n-butyl-p-cresol, myristic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, behenic acid, and squalene.

[Pharmacological action] 1. Anthelmintic effect: European horsetail can paralyze the body of the red threadworm, separate it from the intestinal wall and show an anthelmintic effect. It has a long history of being used as an anthelmintic for the red threadworm and duodenal hookworm. Its active ingredient, magnesium malonic acid, is 5-7 times more effective in repelling insects than crude extract oleoresin, and its toxicity is also twice as high.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; slightly cold; poisonous

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; cools blood and stops bleeding; expels parasites; promotes diuresis and reduces swelling. Mainly used for cold and fever, Japanese encephalitis, mumps, measles, metrorrhagia, intestinal parasites, edema, and urinary incontinence

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocting in water, 3-9g; or grinding into powder, 2-4g.
