[Source] Medicinal material source: The root bark of Acanthopanax fasciata of the Araliaceae family.

【Original form】 Shrub, about 3m high. Branchlets glabrous, often with coarse recurved spines. Leaves are alternate or clustered on short branches; petiole 5-9cm long, often sparsely covered with fine spines or without spines; leaflets 5, rarely 3-4, petiolules 2-7mm long, without spines or sparsely covered with fine spines, leaf blade oblong to oblanceolate, 2-7mm long, without spines or sparsely covered with fine spines, leaf blade oblong to oblanceolate, 4-12cm long, 1.5-4cm wide, with pointed apex, cuneate to broad cuneate base, covered with stiff hairs or prickles along veins on both sides, with fine serrations on margins; lateral veins 8-10 pairs. Umbels are composed of 2-5 terminal panicles, 2-3cm in diameter; the peduncle is 1-5cm long, with thin pedicels; the calyx margin is entire or has 5 small teeth; the flowers are green; there are 5 petals, ovate, reflexed when flowering; there are 5 stamens, with filaments about 1.5mm long; the ovary has 5 chambers, and the styles are fused into a short column. The drupe is berry-like, ovoid, about 5 mm in diameter, slightly 5-ribbed, black when ripe, with a persistent style 1.2 mm long. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in forests at an altitude of 1000-3000.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy; slightly bitter; warm

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and dampness; promote blood circulation and relieve pain. It is used to treat rheumatic pain, soreness of waist and knees, injuries from falls, fractures, headaches, abdominal pain, dysmenorrhea, beriberi, and swelling.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g; or soaked in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application; or soak it in wine and apply externally.
