The efficacy and function of jaundice tree

Nowadays, our living standards are constantly improving, but our health quality is constantly declining. Unscientific diet poses a potential threat to our bodies. Many Chinese medicinal herbs can regulate and improve our bodies. Here I would like to introduce you to the jaundice tree.

[Alias] Prickly Coptis chinensis, Tree Coptis chinensis, Wild Coptis chinensis (Guangxi Chinese Materia Medica), Long-leaf Berberis, Wild Phellodendron (Illustrated Guide to Higher Plants of China), Three Needles (Guangxi Chinese Herbal Medicine).

[Source] It is the stem and root of Berberis schrenkiana, a plant of the Berberidaceae family. In spring and autumn, dig up the whole plant, cut off the branches, leaves and fine roots, or remove part of the cork, and dry it in the sun.

[Original form] Deciduous shrub, about 1 to 3.5 meters high. The stem is much branched, the branches have fine grooves and thorns, the thorns are usually not forked, occasionally three-forked, 1 to 2.5 cm long. The leaves are clustered; oblanceolate to spoon-shaped, with the leaf base gradually narrowing and petiole-shaped, about 4 to 8 cm long, about 1.2 to 2.6 cm wide, entire, and smooth on the surface. Inflorescence slightly racemose, or nearly umbel, axillary; bracteoles lanceolate; 6 sepals, in two whorls, 3 in the inner whorl larger; 6 petals, elliptic-obovate, about 2-3 mm long, slightly narrower than sepals, with two nectaries in the inner tomb; 6 stamens, opposite to petals, anthers bivalve; ovary superior, style not obvious, stigma flat and large, 1 ovule, erect. The berry is rectangular, 9 mm long, red, slightly pink, and has no persistent style.

[Habitat distribution] Growing under forests and beside ditches. Distributed in Guangxi, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and other places. Produced in Guangxi, Jiangsu and other places.

[Properties] The dry stem is cylindrical, with a gray-brown surface, grooves, and a few small lenticels. The upper part is multi-branched, with a branch diameter of about 3 to 5 mm, gray-brown to dark brown, with several obvious longitudinal ridges on the surface; there are many thorns, single or 2 to 3 forked. The main root is cylindrical, with a diameter of 4 to 5 cm or more; the root head has a stem base and buds; the lateral roots and branch roots are twisted; the surface is earthy yellow to gray-brown, and the cork easily falls off in pieces, revealing the brown-yellow bark. The stems, branches and roots are hard in texture, strongly fibrous in cross section, bright yellow in color, with pith in the center of the stems and branches; the roots are pithless, with xylem accounting for the vast majority. When the cross section is placed under fluorescent light, strong yellow fluorescence can be seen. The taste is extremely bitter.

[Chemical composition] Contains berberine, with the root containing 1.52% and the stem and branch containing 0.98% (both calculated as hydrochloride).
