[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Aralia hupehensis, a plant of the Araliaceae family.

[Original form] Hubei Aralia hupensis is a shrub or tree, up to 12m tall. Branchlets densely yellow-brown hairy and prickly. Leaves are bipinnate; stipules and petioles are connate at base, dark brown, with free apex lanceolate; rachis and pinna axis densely pubescent; pinnae are opposite, with 9 leaflets and a pair of leaflets at base; leaflets are papery, ovate to oblong-ovate, 8-13cm long, 3-6cm wide, with long or short acuminate apex, rounded base, rough above, with fine coarse hairs on veins, densely yellow-brown and pubescent below, with serrated edges, teeth with thorny tips, and about 8 pairs of lateral veins. The panicle is terminal, 25-35cm long, with 2-5 branches arranged in finger-like manner; the umbel is single and terminal on the secondary branches, or there are 1-2 lateral umbels, with 10-20 flowers; the bracts are lanceolate, persistent, and the bracteoles are linear; the calyx is glabrous, with 5 triangular sharp teeth on the edge; the petals are 5, white, ovate-triangular; the stamens are 5; the ovary is 5-chambered, the styles are 5, free, and recurved. The fruit is spherical, about 4mm in diameter, black, and has 5 edges. The flowering period is July and the fruiting period is September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on north-facing hillside at an altitude of 1200m.

[Nature and flavor] Spicy, bitter, slightly warm

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis; promote diuresis and reduce swelling. Mainly used for traumatic injury; blood stasis, swelling and pain; fracture; edema; urinary difficulty

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3-10g; or soaked in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount, mash it, stir-fry with wine and apply on the affected area.
