[Original form] 1. Broad-leaved Mahonia evergreen shrub, 1-4m tall. The surface of the stem is earthy yellow or brown, rough, and the cross section is yellow. Leaves are alternate, thick leathery, petiolate, and enlarged at the base to clasp the stem; odd-pinnate compound leaves, 25-40cm long, with 7-15 leaflets, lateral leaflets sessile, broadly ovate, unequal in size, 4-12cm long, 2.5-4.5cm wide, terminal leaflets larger, petiolate, gradually pointed at the apex, broadly cuneate or nearly rounded at the base, with curled edges, 2-8 large thorn-like serrations on each side, dark green and shiny above, yellowish-green beneath. The raceme grows at the top of the stem, is erect, 5-10cm long, clustered with 6-9, with 1 bracteole; 9 sepals, arranged in three; the flowers are yellow-brown, with 6 petals, oblong, 2 shallow lobes at the apex, and 2 dense glands at the base; 6 thick stamens; 1 pistil. The berries are oval, about 5mm in diameter, blue-black when ripe, and covered with white powder. The flowering period is from August to October, and the fruiting period is from October to December.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Growing in thickets on sunny hillsides, and also cultivated.

【Functions and indications】 Clearing away heat; drying dampness; reducing swelling; detoxifying. It is used to treat damp-heat dysentery, diarrhea, jaundice, hemoptysis due to tuberculosis, sore throat, red and swollen eyes, sores, and eczema.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 10-15g, fresh product 30-60g. For external use: take appropriate amount, mash or grind into powder for application.
