What is the role of Chuanqiong?

Chuanxiong is a common plant medicine in traditional Chinese medicine. It has great medicinal value and can be used to treat some physical diseases. Chuanxiong can promote blood circulation and can also be used to treat headaches, colds, abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort and other diseases. It is also good for the heart and can relieve angina pectoris or coronary heart disease.

The efficacy and effects of Chuanxiong

1. Activate blood circulation and promote qi

1. It is used for angina pectoris caused by coronary heart disease, with symptoms of chest tightness, shortness of breath, and frequent tenderness in the precordial area. It can be used together with safflower, salvia miltiorrhiza, agarwood, and red peony root, namely, Coronary Heart Disease Formula No. 2.

2. It is used for diseases caused by qi and blood stasis, such as early menstruation, heavy red menstruation, which is caused by blood heat. It can be used together with raw rehmannia, peony bark, angelica, etc.; late menstruation, once every 1 to 2 months, low back and abdominal pain during menstruation, and white leucorrhea, it can be used together with angelica, roasted ginger, eucommia, cinnamon, etc.

3. For dysmenorrhea, if there is severe waist and abdominal pain before menstruation and menstruation comes one day after the pain, use it together with angelica, peach kernel and safflower; if it is amenorrhea but no discomfort, use it together with angelica, peach kernel, dried ginger and cinnamon; if it is postpartum abdominal pain, use it together with angelica, roasted ginger, etc.

4. Chuanxiong can also be used for bruises, local swelling and pain, etc., and has a good therapeutic effect. Chuanxiong can be used together with gardenia, peach kernel, and safflower, and has a good therapeutic effect.

2. Dispel wind and relieve pain

1. For cold and headache, if it is caused by wind-cold, it can be used together with Schizonepeta, Saposhnikovia and Angelica dahurica; if it is caused by wind-heat, it can be used together with chrysanthemum and mint.

2. Chuanxiong contains a large amount of nutrients, which have the effect of treating rheumatism and pain, and can be used together with Qianghuo, Duhuo, Fangfeng, etc.

3. Regulate Qi and Relieve Depression

1. It is used for upper abdominal and flank pain caused by cholecystitis. It can be used together with Bupleurum chinense, Scutellaria baicalensis, etc.

2. It can be used together with dandelion and costus root for treating upper abdominal distension and pain, acid vomiting and heartburn caused by gastritis.

Chuanxiong is incompatible with Coptis chinensis, Astragalus membranaceus, Cornus officinalis, and Wolfberry chamaejasma, and is afraid of saltpeter and talc, and is antagonistic to Veratrum, so the above should not be used together. Do not overdose, otherwise symptoms such as vomiting and dizziness may occur.

It is contraindicated for use in cases of excessive fire causing fullness in the middle part of the body, spleen deficiency causing poor appetite, fire stagnation causing headache, vomiting and coughing, night sweats causing dry throat and mouth, fever, thirst and irritability.

Daily use of Chuanxiong

1. First, grind the prepared Chuanxiong into powder, then soak it in wine and drink it. It is more effective for migraine.

2. Drink as a tea substitute

3 grams each of Chuanxiong, green tea leaves and chrysanthemum, brewed with boiling water as tea, can be used as an auxiliary treatment for wind-heat headache.

3. Decoction

Siwu Decoction (a combination of four Chinese medicinal herbs: Chuanxiong, Angelica, White Peony Root, and Rehmannia Glutinosa), decocted in water and taken as juice, has the effect of nourishing blood and regulating menstruation.

4. Cooking Soup

5 grams of Chuanxiong, 10 grams of Salvia miltiorrhiza, and 2 eggs. Add Chuanxiong, Salvia miltiorrhiza and eggs into water and cook together. After the eggs are cooked, peel them and continue cooking for a while. Drink soup and eat eggs. It can nourish the liver and kidneys.
