[Original morphology] The red ash tree is an evergreen small tree, 3-9m tall, with glabrous branches and young branches covered with black chestnut short soft hairs. Leaves are opposite or nearly opposite; petioles are 1.5-2cm long, covered with brown or black short soft hairs; leaf blades are oblong-lanceolate or elliptic, 7-9cm long, 2.5-4cm wide, acuminate at the apex, broadly cuneate or nearly rounded at the base, involute at the margin, pale and glabrous above, with sunken veins and longitudinal grooves, covered with brown short soft hairs below, with raised veins, nearly parallel transverse veins, three-veined or three-veined away from the base, with glandular crypts in the vein axils on the underside of the leaf, and hard and leathery. The panicle is terminal, about 8cm long, densely covered with brown short soft hairs, with 2-3 flowers arranged in a cymose manner at the end of the branches; the flowers are bisexual, and the pedicels are 2-3m long; the perianth tube is obconical, the perianth lobes are oblong-elliptic or oblong-obovate, about 5mm long, with rounded apex, and covered with short soft hairs on the outside, there are 9 fertile stamens, and the filaments are 1-1.2mm long and covered with fine short soft hairs. The anthers of the stamens in the 1st and 2nd whorls are elliptical, with rounded apex, the same length as the filaments, 4-chambered, and the filaments have no glands. The anthers of the stamens in the 3rd whorl are elliptical, with rounded apex, the same length as the filaments, 4-chambered, and there is a pair of nearly heart-shaped glands near the middle of the filaments; there are 3 staminodes, about 1mm long, located in the innermost whorl; the ovary is oblong, and the style is about 2mm long and glabrous. Flowering period is May.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on the shady slopes of mountains.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy; warm

【Functions and indications】Warms the middle and strengthens the stomach; promotes blood circulation and relieves pain. It is mainly used for cold pain in the stomach, indigestion, rheumatic pain, and pain caused by trauma and blood stasis.
