[Original form] Perennial upright herb to subshrub, about 0.5-2m tall. The twigs, undersides of leaves, petioles, and inflorescences are densely covered with 5-9 branched gray-brown star-shaped hairs and prickles. The upper leaves are often pseudo-twin, unequal, with petioles 1-3 cm long; the leaf blades are ovate to ovate-elliptical, 5-10 cm long, 4-7 cm wide, acuminate, acute or obtuse at the apex, oblique at the base, with shallow wavy rounded margins, usually 5-7 lobes, dusty gray-green above, gray-green below; the veins are convex below, with fine straight thorns on both sides, and 3-4 lateral veins on each side, with fine straight thorns on both sides or without thorns. The scorpion tail inflorescence is exogenous, about 2.5cm long, with a short or almost absent peduncle; the fertile flowers are larger, solitary at the base of the inflorescence, the infertile flowers are smaller, the pistil has degenerated, and is born together with the cloud flowers, arranged at the upper end of the inflorescence; the calyx is bell-shaped, 1-1.5cm in diameter, densely covered with stellate hairs and fine straight spines on the outside, and only the tips of the lobes are covered with stellate hairs on the inside, with 5 lobes; the corolla is radiant, star-shaped, purple-blue, and the lobes are broadly triangular, about 1cm long and wide, connected by a thin and hairless interpetal membrane; there are 5 stamens, attached to the throat of the corolla tube; the ovary has many embryos. The berries are spherical, glabrous, 2-3 cm in diameter, yellow when ripe, with persistent sepals at the base; the seeds are oblate. Flowering period is summer and fruiting period is winter.
