There are 12 to 20 leaves, all basal, with long petioles, 6 to 34 cm long; the leaf blades are narrowly obovate or oblanceolate, 2.8 to 18 cm long, 1.2 to 3 cm wide, with 3 or 5 main veins, entire margins, and short rough hairs on both sides. There are 1 to 6 pedicels, 32 to 75 cm high, with spreading rough hairs; flowers are solitary at the top of the scape, drooping; petals are 4 (-6), dark red, narrowly elliptic, up to 9 cm long, 4 cm wide, and obtuse at the apex; stamens are up to 2.4 cm long, anthers are about 3.5 mm long, filaments are linear, light red; ovary is ovate, densely covered with yellow coarse hairs, style almost non-existent, stigma is short cylindrical, with several edges, and wing-shaped.
