[Original form] Annual climbing herb. The stem is thin and has short soft hairs. Simple leaves are alternate; membranous; leaf blades are narrowly triangular-halberd-shaped or triangular-cordate, 5-8 cm long, 2.5-5 cm wide, with short or long pointed tips, cordate bases, sparsely shallowly serrated edges, and sometimes 3-5 deeply fissured. Tendrils simple or bifurcated, opposite to leaves. Inflorescence is axillary; flowers are small and unisexual, monoecious; calyx is 5-lobed, with lobes linear-lanceolate; corolla is yellow-green, 5-parted, with lobes triangular-lanceolate; male flowers have 5 stamens, separate; ovary of female flowers is nearly spherical, 1-chambered, with tubercle-like protrusions, 2 ovules, short style, and 2-lobed stigma. The capsule is oval, green, drooping, with fine thorn-like protrusions, and the upper part cracks when ripe. 2 seeds, grey. Flowering period is from July to August. The fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in mountain grass or by the roadside or water. Distributed throughout Northeast, North China and East China.

[Chemical composition] The seeds contain 25-29% fatty oil, 13.28% carbohydrates, 2.95% ash and 0.89% crude fiber. The fatty oil is semi-dry and contains 12.78% solid fatty acids.
