Flowers are unisexual and monoecious; male catkins are axillary, drooping, open before leaves, 9-20cm long; male flowers have short petioles, 1 bract and 1-2 bracteoles, tepals, 3-4 tepals, often with 12 stamens, rarely 13 or 14; female inflorescences are spike-shaped, terminal, erect, with 4-10 female flowers, 4 tepals, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, covered with soft hairs, bracts and bracteoles are connate around the outer wall of the ovary, ovary-positioned, stigma is 2-lobed, bright red.
