[Original form] Celastrus spinulosa is a vine-like shrub, up to 8m long. Stems and branches often have accompanying roots. The outermost pair of bud scales are persistent and are sharp, hooked thorns that often cling to the tree. Simple leaves are alternate, nearly membranous, broadly ovate or nearly circular, 3-5.5cm long, 2-5cm wide, with short acuminate tip, nearly circular or broad cuneate base, and leaf margins with stiff hair-like fine teeth. Cymes are axillary with 1-3 flowers or more in clusters; flowers are unisexual, light yellow, 5-merous, calyx is bell-shaped, 5-lobed; petals are spoon-shaped and oblong; filaments of male flowers are attached to the edge of the disk, and the ovary is degenerate; filaments of female flowers are extremely short, the ovary is 3-chambered, the style is columnar, the stigma is 3-lobed, and the cleft ends are further 2-lobed and reflexed. The capsule is spherical, yellow-green, and 3-lobed. There are 3-6 seeds, dark red in color, with an orange-red aril. The flowering period is June and the fruiting period is October.
