The efficacy and function of Aopuki

[Source] It is the bark of the Magnoliaceae plant Liriodendron chinense .

[Original form] Liriodendron chinense, also known as: Magua tree, Shuangpiao tree. Deciduous tree, up to 15 meters tall. The bark is dark brown and cracked longitudinally. The leaves are alternate; they are in the shape of a magnolia, 4 to 18 cm long and 5 to 20 cm wide, with a flat or slightly concave apex, a rounded or shallowly cordate base, and the middle of each side edge is concave to form two lobes, with pointed or obtuse tips; the petiole is thin, 4 to 8 cm long. The flowers are solitary at the top of the branches, cup-shaped, green on the outside and yellow on the inside; there are 3 sepals, which are spreading; there are 6 petals, which are erect and 3 to 4 cm long; there are many stamens, with filaments about 5 mm long and anthers facing outward; there are many carpels, which are arranged in a shingle-like manner on the spindle-shaped receptacle. The aggregate fruit is yellow-brown, ovate-oblong-conical, 7 to 9 cm long, and composed of winged nutlets, each containing 1 to 2 seeds. Flowering period is May. The fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] It grows wild in valley forests or beside ditches on shady slopes; or it is cultivated for ornamental purposes. Distributed in Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Sichuan and other places.

[Functions and indications] Treats cough, shortness of breath, thirst and floating limbs caused by dampness, wind and cold.

[Usage and Dosage] Take one or two grams of dry bark, add five to six grams of coriander and mountain oil hemp (Yinxingcao), three slices of old ginger, three grams of licorice, decoct in water, add brown sugar, and take once before breakfast and dinner.
