[Original form] Evergreen climbing shrub, 3 to 6 meters long. Leaves are alternate, oblong to ovate-lanceolate, 8-17 cm long, 3-6-8 cm wide, pointed at apex, cuneate to obtuse at base, entire, leathery, nearly glabrous, with 6-7 lateral veins on each side; petiole 1-2 cm long. The flowers are red or yellow with red, unisexual, monoecious, and solitary in leaf axils; the male flower perianth has 10 to 16 petals, the outermost one is the smallest, ovate, about 5 mm long, the largest one is oblong to ovate-oval, 12 to 25 mm long, and there are 14 to 48 stamens arranged in 2 to 5 whorls; the female flower perianth is similar to that of the male flower, the pistil group is ovate to nearly spherical, and there are 50 to 80 carpels arranged in 5 to 7 whorls. The aggregate fruit is nearly spherical, 6 to 10 cm in diameter, and red or dark purple when ripe. Flowering period is from April to July. The fruiting period is from August to December.
