[Other names] Night glory, poison-rooted Vernonia (Guangxi Medicinal Plant List), and Ornamentum sibiricum (Guangzhou Army's Handbook of Commonly Used Chinese Herbal Medicines).

[Source] It is the vine and root of Vernonia tenuifolia, a plant of the Asteraceae family. Available all year round. Wash, slice and dry.

[Original form] Woody vine, about 10 to 12 meters high. There are many twigs with slight hairs. The stem bark is brown. The leaves are alternate, elliptic-lanceolate, 3.5-8 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, obtuse at the base, usually entire, with fine hairs on the surface; the petiole is short, about 5 mm, with fine hairs. Inflorescence capitula, terminal or axillary, about 1 cm in diameter, arranged in cymes; bracts in 4 rows, lanceolate, 1-5 mm long, outer ones shorter; flowers lavender; bisexual, corolla tubular, 5-lobed. Achenes, with numerous pappus.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in ravines, stream banks or in sparse woods and thickets. Distributed in Guangdong.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, slightly warm, poisonous.

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and relieve exterior symptoms, relax muscles and activate blood circulation. Treat colds, malaria, rheumatism, bruises, sore throats and toothaches.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 3 to 5 qian. For external use: decoct in water for washing; or gargle.
