【Alias】 Huangshi (from "Bielu")

[Source] It is an ore of the carbonate mineral calcite . After mining, remove the dirt and rocks.

【Original form】 Trigonal crystal system. The crystals are rhombohedral, but can also be columnar or plate-shaped. The aggregates are often produced in stalactite form or dense granular form. Most of the colors are colorless or milky white. If they contain impurities, they will be dyed into various colors such as gray, yellow, rose, red, brown, etc. With glassy luster. Transparent to opaque. It has complete cleavage and can be split in three different directions. The cross section is shell-shaped. Hardness 3. Specific gravity: 2.6～2.8. It is widely distributed and is an important component of endogenous hydrothermal veins and sedimentary carbonate rocks.

[Habitat distribution] Produced in Henan, Hebei, Sichuan, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi and other places.

[Properties] Mostly irregular block crystals, often in the shape of rhombic columns, with edges and corners, colorless or yellowish white, transparent to opaque, with a smooth surface and glassy luster. It is hard and easy to break into square or rectangular pieces. Slight odor, light taste. White, transparent and fragile ones are preferred. When burned with a blowpipe flame, it decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide gas, which makes the flame brighter and turns it orange-red. Adding hydrochloric acid produces carbon dioxide bubbles.
