[Source] It is the fruit or seed of the Zanthoxylum bungeanum of the Rutaceae family. Harvested in autumn and sun-dried.

[Original form] Evergreen, nearly creeping shrub, 1 to 3.5 meters high. The root bark is yellow, rough, and has a herringbone pattern on the cross section. The stems have brown prickles. Pinnate compound leaves are alternate, 25-30 cm long; leaflets are 5-9, nearly opposite, usually leathery, oblong, oblong-lanceolate or ovate-oblong, 8-15 cm long, 2.5-5 cm wide, acuminate at apex, broadly cuneate at base, entire, smooth on both sides; with short petiolules; small, downward-curved sharp spines grow on twigs, rachis, petiole, and sometimes on the midrib underside of leaves. The cymose panicles are axillary and shorter than the leaves; the bracts are small and oval; the flowers are unisexual; the male inflorescences are slender, the male flowers have 4 oval sepals, 4 petals, which are yellow, and the stamen filaments are longer than the petals; the female flowers are similar to the male flowers, without degenerate stamens, and with 4 carpels. The follicles are flat and oval, densely clustered, light brown, wrinkled, and slightly like clam shells. The seeds are spherical, black and shiny. Flowering period is from April to May. Fruiting period is from June to August.
