Perennial herb. The stolons are creeping; the erect stems are 30 to 40 cm tall and yellow-green in color; the nutrient branches are flat and fan-shaped with many bifurcations. The leaves are slightly decussated and arranged in 4 rows; the leaves in the two lateral rows are scaly, rhombic, and awl-shaped, extending downward and fused, with sharp thorns at the tip, and curved toward the ventral side; the leaves on the dorsal side are linear-lanceolate, with short sharp thorns at the tip, and sandwiched between the leaves on both sides; the ventral leaves are very small, scaly, awl-shaped, 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the dorsal leaves, with short sharp thorns. The spore branches are much higher than the lateral nutrient branches, and the top is forked twice; each of the terminal branches has a sporangium spike at the top; the spore leaves are broadly ovate, with a sharply narrowed and gradually pointed tip, irregularly serrated edges, and a petiole at the base.
