[Original form] A shrub of the Chinese magnolia tree, 2-3m tall. The branches are drooping, brown and striped. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is up to 1 cm long and pubescent; leaf blade is elliptical, ovate or obovate, 5-10 cm long, 2-4.5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, rarely nearly rounded, margin entire or with inconspicuous sparse and blunt teeth, rarely shallowly wavy, sparsely pubescent on both sides, especially when young. Flowers are bisexual, racemes are axillary, the inflorescences are very short, in umbels, with 4-5 flowers, covered with pubescence; pedicels are relatively long; calyx is short, boat-shaped, covered with pubescence on the outside, 5-toothed, triangular-shaped; petals are 5, white, linear-spoon-shaped, 3-4.5cm long, 5-6mm wide, with acute apex; stamens are 10, anthers are attached under the teeth of the stamen tube, the stamen tube is long and narrow, 4-9-lobed, the lobes are 1-2 times longer than the anthers, usually 2 more deeply lobed, and glabrous; disk surrounds the base of the ovary; ovary is short, the flowers are elongated, extending out of the stamen tube, and the stigma is bottle-shaped. The capsule is spherical, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, glabrous, and contains 5 seeds. The seeds are oblong, usually curved like a crescent, about 7mm long and 3mm wide. Flowering period is from April to July.
