[Source] The stems , leaves and root bark of Rhamnaceae . Harvested in summer and autumn. Dry in the sun.

[Original form] Deciduous shrub, up to 2 meters high. The branches are gray-brown, with many branches, slender twigs, fine white hairs, and sharp thorns at the branch ends. The leaves are alternate or nearly opposite, papery, obovate or nearly round, 2-4 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide, acute to acuminate at the apex, broadly cuneate at the base, with obtuse serrations on the margins, green above, light green below, with short hairs on both sides, 3-5 pairs of main and lateral veins protruding below, with denser hairs on the veins; the petiole is 0.3-1 cm long, densely covered with short hairs, and with shallow grooves. The flowers are borne in leaf axils in cymes; petals and stamens are attached to the edge of the disk; ovary is superior, and the style is 2-lobed. The fruit is nearly spherical. The seeds are oblate, black, shiny, and have yellow-brown oblique grooves at the base. Flowering period: spring and summer.

[Habitat distribution] Grows wild in jungles on hillsides. Distributed throughout Northeast China and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
