The basal leaves are leathery, lanceolate or oblanceolate, 5-25cm long, 1.2-4cm wide, obtuse at the apex, gradually narrow at the base, with membranous leaf sheaths, sharp bony serrations on the edges, glabrous on both sides, with pinnate reticulate veins reaching the tips of the serrations to form hard thorns, and no petioles. The scape is erect, stout, dichotomously branched, with sparsely serrated stem leaves; the cyme composed of multiple capitula has three to five dichotomously branched branches; the involucral bracts are 5-6, leaf-like, spreading and reflexed, with 1-3 spiny serrations on the margins; the involucral bracteoles are lanceolate, with transparent membranous margins; the calyx teeth are ovate-lanceolate, with sharp tips; the petals are oblanceolate to obovate, with inflexed apex, white, light yellow or grass green; the style is erect or tilted outward.
