[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb with roots of the Umbelliferae plant Eryngium.

[Original form] Biennial or perennial herb, 10-60cm high. The whole plant has a special aroma. Root fusiform. The stem is glabrous, with three to five cymose branches at the top. The basal leaves are leathery, lanceolate or oblanceolate, 5-25cm long, 1.2-4cm wide, obtuse at the apex, gradually narrow at the base, with membranous leaf sheaths, sharp bony serrations on the edges, glabrous on both sides, with pinnate reticulate veins reaching the tips of the serrations to form hard thorns, and no petioles. The scape is erect, stout, dichotomously branched, with sparsely serrated stem leaves; the cyme composed of multiple capitula has three to five dichotomously branched branches; the involucral bracts are 5-6, leaf-like, spreading and reflexed, with 1-3 spiny serrations on the margins; the involucral bracteoles are lanceolate, with transparent membranous margins; the calyx teeth are ovate-lanceolate, with sharp tips; the petals are oblanceolate to obovate, with inflexed apex, white, light yellow or grass green; the style is erect or tilted outward. The double-hanging fruit is spherical or oval, 1.1-1.3mm long and 2-1.3mm wide, with tumor-like protrusions on the surface and unclear fruit edges. The flowering and fruiting period is from April to December.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in hills and mountain forests at an altitude of 100-1450m, under forests, on the edge of forests, on roadsides, on ditches and other shady and wet places.

[Chemical composition] The root contains saponins, and the root oil contains 2,3,6-trimethylbenzaldehyde and 2-formyl-1,1,5-trimethylcyclohexa-2, 4-dien-6-ol. The whole plant contains volatile oils, including 2-dodecenal (dodec-2-en-1-al), α-pinene (α-pinene), fenchyla1cohol and furanol. It also contains water, carbohydrates, crude protein, crude fiber, and inorganic elements such as calcium, phosphorus, and iron.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy; bitter; neutral

【Functions and indications】It can relieve cough; clear rash and detoxify; regulate qi and relieve pain; and act as a diuretic and reduce swelling. It is used to treat colds, coughs and asthma, measles that have not completely gone away, sore throat, pain in the uterus, food stagnation, vomiting, abdominal distension and pain, diarrhea, intestinal carbuncle, hepatitis, painful stranguria, edema, furunculosis, burns, falls, swelling caused by falls, and snake bites.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 6-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount, decoct in water and use for washing; or mash and apply on the affected area.
