[Source] Medicinal material source: The whole body of the naked square worm of the family Asparagidae.

[Original form] The naked star worm has an oblong body, slightly similar to an earthworm, with a body length of 120-220mm and a width of about 10mm for the larger ones. The body wall longitudinal muscles are bundled into 30-31 lines, which are arranged in a checkered pattern with the circular muscles, with clear vertical and horizontal lines. The length of the snout is about 1/10 of the body length. There is a groove at the base of the snout, with many imbricate skin protrusions arranged irregularly. The front part of the snout is smooth, with a circle of tentacles at the front, which are star-shaped when stretched and wrinkled when contracted. The mouth is located on the back near the front 1/6 of the body, with a transverse crack. That is the opening of the anus. There is a kidney hole on each side of the ventral side of the anus. The digestive tract is long and slender, about twice the length of the body, and twisted into a spiral shape. Posterior end of body obtuse. The body is milky white with a slight red tint.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Burrowing in coastal intertidal mudflats, most abundant at low tide lines. It emerges from its cave at high tide and can swim in the water like a snake, feeding on organic matter.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The whole body is flat and cylindrical, slightly similar to the shape of an earthworm, with a body length of 12-22cm, and the surface is grayish white to light brown. The snout is short, with a ring-shaped hook at the base and a round tentacle at the front, forming a wrinkle. The trunk is covered with longitudinal grooves, forming a checkered pattern, with a total of 29-30 rows of squares around it. The posterior end of the body is blunt, and the anus is a horizontal crack located on the back near the front 1/6 of the body. It has a slightly fishy smell and tastes salty.

【Chemical composition】 Octopus muscle contains octopine dehydrogenase, phosphofructokinase, phosphate, fructose 2,6-bisphosphate, adenylic acid, adenosine triphosphate, and paramyosin.

[Pharmacological action] 1. Effect on the cardiovascular system: Anesthetized dogs were injected with 0.6-1.5g/kg of siphonophore decoction and alcohol precipitation. After a short and mild hypotension, the blood pressure rose rapidly. The blood pressure increase in dogs with hemorrhagic hypotension is greater than that in dogs with normal blood pressure. In the analysis of pressor mechanism, Siemprenix worms can increase the coronary blood flow in isolated rabbit hearts and in vivo dog hearts. Intravenous injection of 1g/kg of siphonanthus decoction and alcohol precipitation can increase the dog's heart rate and cardiac output. Star worms also significantly reduced the perfusion flow rate of isolated rabbit ears, and intravenous injection of 1.5g/kg could antagonize the vasodilation effect of 0.3u/kg of kallikrein produced by intravenous injection of canine blood vessels. Phentolamine and propranolol can partially block the cardiovascular effects of Siegespermum officinale. This suggests that star worms may have adrenaline-like effects that can excite α and β receptors.
