[Source] It is the root or whole herb of the Poaceae plant Imperata cylindrica . Available all year round.

[Original form] Aspergillus niger, also known as: Aspergillus niger (Compendium of Materia Medica).

[Habitat distribution] Growing on hillside grasslands. Distributed in South China, Southwest China, Central China, Zhejiang, Shaanxi and other places.

[Chemical composition] Hay (collected during the flowering period) contains 11.2% moisture, 4.9% ash, 3.9% protein, 1.5% lipids, 36.0% crude fiber, and 42.5% carbohydrates. The polysaccharides contained are mainly hemicelluloses. Low molecular weight sugars include sucrose. Glucose, fructose, galactitol, meso-inositol and raffinose.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet, cold.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and quenches thirst, dispels wind and dampness. Treat fever, indigestion, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, and joint pain.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5-1 liang; mash into juice or soak in water. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat cough caused by wind and cold: decocted 1-2 grams of roots of Chinese needle grass in water and taken orally.
