The root contains chrysophanol, emodin, pigments, organic acids, calcium oxalate, tannins, resins, sugars, starch, mucus, etc.

[Source morphology] Perennial herb, about 1 meter tall, with thick and large yellow roots. The stem is erect, purple-green, and the basal leaves have long petioles; the stem leaves are ovate-lanceolate and alternate. Small light green flowers bloom in summer, with 6 tepals, and achenes that are ovate, three-angled, and dark brown.

[Functions and indications] Clears away heat and detoxifies, stops bleeding, removes blood stasis, promotes bowel movements, and kills insects. Used for lung abscesses, hemoptysis caused by pulmonary tuberculosis, epistaxis, epidemic encephalitis B, acute and chronic hepatitis, and constipation; used externally to treat injuries from falls, burns, carbuncles, furunculosis, mumps, scabies, eczema, and dermatitis.

1. Treatment of external injuries: The crushed leaves of Rhubarb are a magical medicine for treating external injuries; the roots are cut into slices and boiled into soup, which can also clear away heat, detoxify and treat constipation. 6. To treat tinea capitis, psoriasis, athlete's foot, white baldness on the head, etc.; add 1 cup of sheep's trotter juice, 1 cup of rice vinegar, and 1 penny of alum powder, mix well and apply to the affected area, three times a day.

7. To treat gonorrhea: 1 liang of sheep's hoof, 3 cicada shells, decocted in water, take twice a day.

8. To treat scabies and early stage sores (before suppuration); mash an appropriate amount of fresh sheep’s trotters and apply to the affected area.
