Remedies for Nux vomica poisoning

Money seed, also known as Strychnos nux vulture, is the dried and perfect seed of the plant Strychnos nux vomica or Strychnos yunnanensis of the Logarithmaceae family. It has the effects of clearing meridians and relieving pain, eliminating lumps and swelling. It is mainly used to treat rheumatism, numbness and paralysis, injuries from falls, carbuncle swelling and pain, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. However, it is highly toxic and improper use can easily lead to poisoning. Let’s take a look at the rescue methods for Strychnos nux vomica poisoning!

1. Avoid stimulation: Keep in a dark room and avoid sound and light stimulation.

2. Protect the trachea and control convulsions: Immediately use diazepam, phenobarbital, phenytoin sodium and other drugs for intravenous injection to control convulsions, or 10% chloral hydrate retention enema.

3. Reduce the absorption of harmful substances and speed up the removal of harmful substances: After the convulsions are controlled and the intestinal tract is protected, those who are poisoned by oral ingestion can have their stomachs lavaged by inserting a gastric tube if conditions permit, and activated carbon can be injected after gastric lavage.

4. Muscle weakness: For those whose muscle spasms cannot be controlled, muscle relaxants can be used on the basis of tracheotomy and artificial ventilation.

5. Symptomatic and supportive treatment: such as maintaining water and electrolyte balance, correcting metabolic acidosis, maintaining adequate urination, and maintaining kidney function.

External application of strychnine also needs to be prepared with traditional Chinese medicine, otherwise it will cause great irritation to the skin and easily cause allergic reactions. When applying it externally, the amount used should not be too large, otherwise there is a possibility of strychnine poisoning.
