Large-leafed rough sedge is a perennial herb, 80-100cm tall. The stem is erect, branched at the top, quadrangular, and sparsely covered with short stiff hairs pointing downward. Basal leaves are broadly ovate, gradually pointed at the apex, shallowly cordate at the base, with serrated or tooth-like edges; stem leaves are opposite; the same shape as the basal leaves; petiole 7-9cm long; leaf blade 9-15cm long; 8-10cm wide, the upper stem leaves are smaller, with petiole 2-3cm long; leaf blades are covered with sparse short stiff hairs above, and with longer stellate soft hairs on the middle branches below; bracts are nearly sessile. The cyme is multi-flowered; the bracts are lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, 9-10mm long, with nodal hairs on the margins; the calyx is tubular, 8-10mm long, with nodal bristles on the outer veins, with 5 teeth and very short thorn tips; the corolla is pink, about 2cm long, lip-shaped, with white sparse soft hairs on the upper part of the outer surface of the corolla tube, with a hair ring inside, the outer surface of the upper lip is covered with nodal wool and the middle branch has particularly long stellate hairs, with small teeth on the margins, and the outer surface of the lower lip is covered with soft hairs, 3-lobed, the middle lobe is larger, broadly ovate, and the lateral lobes are smaller and ovate; the stamens are 4, didyna, the anterior pair is longer, the posterior pair has short spur-shaped appendages at the base of the teeth, the upper part of the filaments has long hairs, and the anthers are 2-chambered; the pistil has 2 ovaries, fused, the style is simple, and the stigma is 2-lobed. The nutlets are ovate-triangular, with short hairs at the tip. Flowering period is July-August, and fruiting period is August-October.
