[Original morphology] Dow's sun sea star has a large and round body disk, 10-15 arms with short tips, the radial diameter of large individuals reaches 190mm, and the inter-radial diameter is about 75mm. The dorsal plate is reticular, with round, oval or flat-topped pseudo-columns of varying sizes on the plate, each pseudo-column has a nipple-like central protrusion and 10-30 small spines on the edge of the particles. The upper edge plates are rounded, smaller, and each has a group of small spines. The lower edge plate is rectangular, relatively large, with 40-60 relatively long spines each, arranged in 2-3 horizontal rows. The radial part between the oral surfaces is narrow, with only a few ventral plates, each with 5-20 granular spines. Oral plate large, triangular, with 6-9 marginal spines and 3-4 orofacial spines.
