[Source] It is the roots and seeds of Scopolamine tangutica, a plant of the Solanaceae family. Roots: Dig up in September and October, wash off the mud and sand, remove the outer skin and fibrous roots, slice and dry, grind, and set aside after processing. Seeds: Harvested when the fruit is ripe.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 50 to 130 cm tall. The root is cylindrical or conical, thick and long. The stem is cylindrical, erect, mostly clustered, with longitudinal grooves, and branches in the middle and upper parts. Simple leaves are alternate; basal leaves are scale-like; stem leaves are ovate or oblong, 5-20 cm long, 4-16 cm wide, with acute apex, wavy or serrated edges, and rarely serrated tiny spines; hairy on the underside and veins; petiole is 1-3 cm long and hairy. The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils, purple-brown; the calyx is bell-shaped, 3.5 cm long, with 5 irregular shallow teeth on the edge of the tip, 10 obvious veins, and swells after fruiting; the corolla is bell-shaped, slightly longer than the calyx, covered with white short soft hairs, 3 to 3.5 cm in diameter, with 5 shallow lobes at the tip, curled; 5 stamens, attached to the base of the corolla; 1 pistil. The capsule is spherical, cracked in the middle, about 1.5 to 3 cm in diameter, and enclosed in a persistent woody calyx. The seeds are round, slightly flat, and brown.

[Habitat distribution] Grown on roadsides, ditches and under forests. Distributed in Qinghai and Gansu. Sichuan and Tibet.

[Properties] ① The dry roots are cylindrical or conical, with a thick and short rhizome at the top and longitudinal grooves. The diameter of the main root is about 3 to 5.6 cm, the outer surface is brown or black brown, with longitudinal wrinkles and root marks. It is hard and brittle, and dust flies when it breaks. The cross section is pale yellowish white or grayish brown, with radial fine cracks and concentric layers. Powdery, odorless, bitter.

【Chemical composition】 Contains scopolamine. The roots also contain bioalkaloids such as cyperine, hyoscyamine, hyoscyamine, tropine, and tropine. Among them, scopolamine is the most abundant, followed by scopolamine, and the least abundant.

【Pharmacological action】 ① Central nervous system effect

[Properties and flavors] ① "Selected Chinese Herbal Medicines from Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Qinghai": "bitter, pungent, warm, and toxic."

【Functions and indications】Analgesia, anesthesia, antispasmodic, and anti-edema.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: prepare into tincture or mixture for oral use. For external use: grind into powder and apply on skin.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat pain caused by ulcer disease, acute and chronic gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal functional disorders, biliary ascariasis, cholelithiasis, etc.: Grind 100 grams of Tibetan eggplant root, add appropriate amount of 70% alcohol, and make Tibetan eggplant tincture according to the provisions of the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" (same as belladonna tincture). 0.6-1.5 ml each time, 2-4.5 ml per day. For preparation as a mixture: add 60 ml of Tibetan Solanum tincture to 1000 ml of water. Take orally 10-15 ml each time, 2-3 times a day.
