[Source] This product is the dried tuberous root of Liriope spicata (Thunb.) Lour. var. prolifera YTMa or Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily, both plants of the Liliaceae family . Dig up in early summer, wash, expose to the sun and pile up repeatedly until almost dry, remove the fibrous roots and dry.

[Properties] Hubei Ophiopogon japonicus: spindle-shaped, slightly pointed at both ends, 1.2-3cm long, 0.4-0.7cm in diameter. The surface is light yellow to brownish yellow with irregular longitudinal wrinkles. It is flexible, but becomes hard and brittle after drying and easily breaks. The cross section is light yellow to brownish yellow, horny, and has a small central column. It has a slight odor, sweet taste, and becomes sticky when chewed.

【Identification】 (1) Cross-section of this product: The epidermis of Hubei Ophiopogon japonicus is a row of thin-walled cells. The root is composed of 1 row of cells. The cortex is broad, and the thin-walled cells contain bundles of calcium oxalate raphides, which are 27 to 60 μm long. The cell walls of the endodermis are thickened and lignified, with channel cells, and 1 to 2 rows of stone cells on the outside, with thickened inner and side walls and fine pores. The pistil is very small, with 7 to 15 phloem bundles, each located between the star corners of the xylem bundle, and the lignified cells on the inner side of the xylem bundle are connected into a ring layer. The pith is small, with round thin-walled cells.
