[Source] It is the tuberous root of Asparagus officinalis L., a plant of the Liliaceae family. Dig up the tubers in spring and autumn, wash them, blanch them in boiling water and then dry them in the sun.

[Original morphology] Perennial herb, smooth and hairless, slightly powdery. The stems are long and soft. The leaves are filamentous, in clusters of 3 to 6, 5 to 30 mm long; the scale leaves are light yellow. Dioecious, flowers 6mm long, 1 to 4 axillary, pedicel about 1cm long; male flowers have 6 tepals, 5 to 6mm long, 6 stamens, with the anther attached; female flowers have tepals about 3mm long, with 6 degenerate stamens. The berries are spherical and red. Flowering period is from July to August.

【Habitat distribution】 Cultivated in various places. Mainly produced in Guangxi.

[Properties] The tubers are clustered in groups of several or dozens, or scattered individually. It is long cylindrical, 10 to 25 cm long, about 4 mm in diameter, yellowish-white or khaki in appearance, with irregular grooves. The texture is soft and tough, and the cross section is light yellowish white.

[Chemical composition] Contains saponin, the sapogenin of which is sarsasa-pogenin. In addition, it also contains coniferin, chelidonic acid, asparagine, asparagine, arginine, etc.

[Nature and flavor] Slightly warm, bitter and slightly spicy.
