[Source] It is the root of the Umbelliferae plant. It can be dug in spring and autumn, washed and dried.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 30 to 50 cm high. It has an oblong taproot. The stem is solitary or in clusters of a few, and is generally smooth and hairless. The basal leaves are 3-pinnate compound leaves with petioles, 3-4 cm long; the lobes are long fusiform or linear-lanceolate, entire, acuminate at both ends, with 3-5 obvious parallel veins; the stem leaves are similar to the basal leaves, but the leaves are smaller, the base of the petiole embraces the stem, and the leaves at the top are almost not compound leaves but simple leaves. Compound umbels are axillary or terminal; 5-8 umbels, without involucre; 10-20 umbels, unequal in length, with several involucral bracts at the base, narrowly lanceolate, glabrous; calyx teeth are short triangular; 5 petals, white, with sharp tips, slightly curved inwards; 5 stamens, with curved filaments and anthers splitting vertically; ovary ovate, with a short style. The double-hanging fruit is oval, purple-brown, with obvious ridges, but not lignified. Flowering period is from August to September. The fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown on roadsides and in grass on hillsides of barren mountains. Distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places. Produced in Yunnan, Sichuan and other places.

[Properties] The dry roots are conical or oblong, slightly curved, sometimes branched, 10 to 20 cm long, about 0.5 to 1.5 cm in diameter, and gray-brown or brown-yellow in appearance. The root head is sometimes enlarged (up to 2 cm) or sometimes shrunken, with a distinct sunken stem scar at the top, surrounded by fine annular patterns and remaining leaf sheath fibers. The cross section is uneven. The center is yellow xylem. The cortex occupies most of the root and is white with scattered brown oil spots, especially near the cambium. The best ones are those with thick strips, fine yellow skin, white inside, visible chrysanthemum heart, oily texture and sweet taste.

[Pharmacological action] It is a crystalline cardiac glycoside from the same plant genus. 2.2 grams of hay is equivalent to 1 cat unit. The plant extract has a constrictive effect on isolated rabbit ear blood vessels.
