[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Salvia officinalis, a plant of the Lamiaceae family.

[Original form] Buckwheat sage, perennial herb, 20-50cm tall. The stem is quadrangular, grooved, and covered with yellow-brown soft hairs. The main root is elongated, up to 40 cm long and 2.5 cm thick, twisted, woody, and has a reddish bark when it peels off. Leaves are opposite; petioles are 9-21cm long and hairy; leaf blades are ovate, 4-15cm long, 2-10cm wide, with sharp tips, shaped bases, crenate edges, thin papery, and covered with yellow-brown glandular dots. Inflorescence is in whorls, with 2-4 flowers in each whorl, forming terminal racemes or racemose panicles; bracts are broadly ovate, entire, ciliate, and pedicels are about 3mm long; calyx is narrowly campanulate or bell-shaped, two-lipped, with lip cleft less than 1/3 of the calyx length, and the lower lip is nearly equal to the upper lip; corolla is purple-brown or red, the corolla tube is cylindrical, and the corolla brim is two-lipped; fertile stamens extend to the upper lip, and the filaments are flat; the style is equal in length to the upper lip of the corolla, with two shallow lobes at the tip. The nutlets are dark brown, obovate, with rounded apex and stripes on the back. The flowering period is from May to November, and the fruiting period is November.

【Habitat distribution】Ecological environment: grown in wilderness, grasslands and hillsides.

[Chemical composition] The root contains tanshinone Ⅰ, ⅡA, methylene tanshiquinone, and protocatechualdehyde.

[Pharmacological action] The water-soluble fraction of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae was injected intraperitoneally into mice at a dose equivalent to 30 g/(raw drug)/kg. 1.5 hours after administration, it was found that Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae significantly improved the mice's ability to tolerate hypoxia at normal pressure.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; slightly cold

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation and regulate menstruation; remove blood stasis and relieve pain. It is mainly used for irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, abdominal pain due to yin stasis after childbirth, hepatosplenomegaly, joint pain, chest colic, palpitations and insomnia.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 6-15g; or made into pills or powder.
