[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of Polypodium vulgare, a plant of the Polypodiaceae family.

【Original morphology】Plant height 25-70cm. The rhizome is long and horizontal, thick, and densely covered with brown-brown, lanceolate, coarse sieve-like scales. Leaves are distal; petioles are 10-20cm long, straw-colored, smooth, and attached to the rhizome at the joint at the base; leaf blades are papery, oblong-lanceolate, 15-40cm long, 8-20cm wide, with a caudal tip and slightly narrowed base, with sparsely brown, oval, coarse sieve-like scales on the rachis and lower part of the midrib, and deeply pinnately lobed almost to the rachis; pinnae are 15-25 pairs, oblong-lanceolate, 5-8cm long, 1-2cm wide, with blunt tips and notched serrations on the edges; venation is obvious, with a row of neat meshes on each side of the midrib. The sori are round, attached to the tips of the intrareticular veins, in a row on either side of the midrib; there is no sori cover.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: epiphytic on tree trunks or rocks in evergreen broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 400-2700m.

【Chemical composition】 The whole plant contains β-sitosterol, 22(29)-hopene (hop-22(29)-ene), 9(11)-fern-9(11)-ene, etc.

【Nature and flavor】 Slightly bitter; cool

【Functions and indications】 Relaxes muscles and tendons; clears away heat and detoxifies; reduces swelling and relieves pain. Mainly used for rheumatism, traumatic injury, carbuncle, swelling and sore

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 6-15g. For external use: apply appropriate amount, grind into powder and sprinkle; or mash fresh product and apply on the affected area.
