[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Pteris sphaerocephala of the Pteridaceae family.

[Original form] Terrestrial fern, plant height 25-30cm. The rhizome is short and horizontal, densely covered with brown diamond-shaped scales. Leaves subspermous; petiole 5-20cm long, straw color, brown at the bottom, flat on the ventral side or with shallow longitudinal grooves, dorsal side arcuate; leaf blade papery, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 10-20cm long, 1.5-2cm wide, once pinnate, sometimes twice pinnate at the bottom; pinnae 15-20 pairs, alternate or slightly oblique upward, oblique round fan-shaped or nearly round, with concave inner edge of the base, straight lower edge, and irregular sharp teeth on the outer circular surface, 7-10mm long, 10-12mm wide; veins dichotomously branched. The sori are attached along the upper edge of the pinnae; the sori cap is linear, membranous, spreading outward, and has fine serrations on the margins.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing under forests or on rocks beside streams at an altitude of 500-1100m.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The rhizome is cylindrical, with densely covered reddish-brown narrow scales on the surface and numerous gray-brown fibrous roots at the base. The petiole is 5-11cm long, chestnut brown, with grooves on the upper side, slightly rounded and smooth on the lower side; the leaf blade is long-lanceolate, 15-20cm long, 1.5-2cm wide, one to two pinnates, papery, and gray-green; the rachis is straw-colored, with four edges, the pinnae have short petioles, are fan-shaped, the inner edge of the base is concave, the lower edge is straight, the outer edge is round and has irregular sharp teeth, and the veins are mostly dichotomous and fan-shaped; the sporangium groups grow on the connecting veins at the top of the veinlets, close to the leaf margin, and are distributed continuously; the sporangium cover is linear, brown, and has fine teeth. The texture is tough, the smell is slight, the taste is light and slightly bitter.
