[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Rheum officinale of the Polygonaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial small herb, 10-20cm high. The stem is erect and pubescent; the basal leaves are broadly ovate, 3-5cm long, 1.5-3cm wide, nearly leathery, obtuse at the apex, cordate at the base, entire margin with ciliate margins, glabrous above, sometimes sparsely pubescent along the veins, pubescent along the veins below; the main vein is thick and slightly convex; the petiole is thick, nearly as long as the leaf or longer than the leaf blade, with 1-2 stem leaves, which are smaller; the stipule sheath is membranous. Inflorescence conical, narrow, sparsely branched; tepals light green, or purple-red; pedicels thin, weak, with joints near base. The achenes are connected with wings to form an ovate triangle, with narrow wings, about 5mm long and 3-4mm wide.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in slope shrubs and river valley terraces at an altitude of 4000-4300m.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The root is conical in shape, thin on top and thin on the bottom, yellowish brown on the surface, 5-10 cm long, 1.5 cm in diameter, with longitudinal wrinkles, gray-brown in cross section, and bitter and astringent in taste.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; cold

【Functions and indications】Purges excess heat; breaks up stagnation; removes blood stasis; eliminates carbuncle and swelling. Stagnation of staple food; abdominal distension and pain; constipation due to heat accumulation; jaundice; amenorrhea; abdominal masses; carbuncle, erysipelas; traumatic injury; burns caused by water or fire

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3-10g. For external use: take appropriate amount, grind into powder and apply on the affected area.

[Discussions by various scholars] 1. "Xinhua Compendium of Materia Medica": Whole leaves: bitter, sour, cold in nature. It has the functions of draining "yellow water", clearing accumulated heat and relieving constipation. Used for "yellow water" disease, ascites, arthritis, itching, eczema, and constipation.
