[Source] Medicinal material source: the root bark or stem bark of the Rutaceae plant Zanthoxylum bungeanum.

[Original form] Wild pepper shrub, 1-2m high. The trunk is sometimes thornless, and the branches usually have prickles and white lenticels. The shoulder width at the base of the prickles can reach 2 cm. The odd-pinnate compound leaves are alternate and thickly papery; the rachis margin has narrow wings and prickles of varying lengths; the petioles are extremely short, the apical leaflets are petiolate, 0.5-1cm long; the leaflets are 5-11, ovate, ovate-oblong or broadly ovate, 2-5cm long, 1-3cm wide, with acute or obtuse apex, broadly cuneate or nearly circular base, slightly asymmetrical on both sides, with fine and blunt serrations on the margins, transparent glandular dots on both sides and in the crevices, and densely covered with short thorn-like bristles on the upper surface, which are most obvious on the midrib. The cymose panicle is apical, 1-5cm long; the flowers are unisexual, with 5-8 tepals in a whorl; the male flowers have 5-7 stamens, rarely 4 or 8, the connective has a triangular surface with 1 dark glandular dot, and the disk is annular and enlarged; the female flowers have 2-3 carpels, rarely 1, with 1 glandular dot on the dorsal suture, the style is curved outward, and the stigma is slightly obtuse triangle. Mature carpels have 1-2, rarely 3, red to purple-red, with densely packed translucent glandular dots on the surface, protruding after drying, with short stalks, about 2.5 mm long. The seeds are nearly spherical, about 4mm in diameter, and shiny black. The flowering period is from March to May, and the fruiting period is from June to August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in thickets below 500m above sea level, and also cultivated.

[Chemical composition] The root contains the bioalkalis skimmianine, edulinine, ribalinine and alariopsine.

[Pharmacological action] 1. Effect on striated muscle: 1 mg/ml of water-soluble bioalkali of Zanthoxylum bungeanum was intravenously injected into rabbits at 2 ml/min. It was found that the average dosage of the drug was 10.86 mg/kg, which caused the rabbits to droop their heads. This effect is reversible and can be antagonized by neostigmine. When 9.4 mg/kg was injected into dogs, a significant muscle relaxant effect was observed. Intramuscular injection in chicks can cause convulsive anesthesia at first, followed by flaccid paralysis 2 minutes later. Intravenous injection of 15-20 mg/kg can weaken the contraction of the anterior tibial nerve and tibial anterior muscle in rabbits, mainly due to the blocking of the nerve-fat junction. This effect can also be blocked by neostigmine.
