[Source] Medicinal material source: The algae of the smooth Spirogyra, twisted Spirogyra and heteromorphic Spirogyra of the family Diplophyceae.

[Original morphology] 1. The vegetative cells of smooth Spirogyra are 70-84μm wide and 93-300μm long. The transverse wall is straight; there are 3-5 chloroplasts, forming 1-5 spiral turns; the fusion tube is formed by the male and female gametangia, forming a trapezoidal fusion. Zygosporangium cylindrical. The zygospores are oval, pointed at both ends, 105-189 μm long, 55-90 μm wide, and yellow.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Grown in rice fields, ponds, ditches and lotus ponds, most abundant in summer and autumn.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The dried product is in irregular flakes, grass green to dark green, of varying sizes and thicknesses, with fine filaments visible on the surface. It has a fishy smell and a salty taste.

[Chemical composition] Spirogyra contains pentagalloylglucose, namely 3-O-digalloyl-1,2,6-trigalloylglucose.

[Pharmacological action] The methanol extract of Spirogyra has the activity of α-glucosidase inhibitor, and the inhibition is competitive, and it also has certain α-amylase inhibitory activity. The extract also has antibacterial activity and has inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Clostridium difficile, Mycobacterium phlei, Micrococcus xanthus, Proteus vulgaris, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 1.5μl of the extract was added to 2.7cm2 liquid monolayer Vero cells and showed certain cytotoxic activity.
