[Pharmacological action] Wheat straw water extract has an anthelmintic effect. Its active ingredient has not yet been discovered. It is soluble in water and alcohol but insoluble in organic solvents. For earthworm muscle specimens, low concentrations cause excitation, while high concentrations cause paralysis. It has an inhibitory effect on the tension and contraction amplitude of human ascaris slices and rabbit intestines. It can inhibit the frog's heart, but has no effect on the blood pressure and respiration of rabbits. No toxic symptoms were observed in animals after long-term oral or injection administration. The in vitro anthelmintic effect is poorer than other drugs. The clinical anthelmintic rate is 69-78%, the complete anthelmintic rate is 0-16%, and the worm egg reduction rate is 60-66.8%. The insect repellent is mainly contained in the nodes of wheat straw. When it comes to killing earthworms, buckwheat straw is more effective than barley straw and wheat straw. This anthelmintic substance is heat-resistant, but its effectiveness will decrease if it is boiled for too long. Hemicellulose in wheat straw has also been reported to have a high degree of anti-cancer effects (in mice). This effect is not a one-shot cytotoxic effect. Polysaccharides can be extracted from wheat straw, which has an anti-cancer effect.
