Plantain and Gout

Plantain is the dried and intact seed of the plant Plantain, which is a Chinese medicinal material. It has the effects of clearing away heat, detoxifying, promoting diuresis and relieving stranguria, infiltrating dampness and treating diarrhea, nourishing the liver and improving eyesight, and relieving cough and removing phlegm. Experimental studies in recent years have shown that plantain has the effect of lowering uric acid.

At present, clinical experimental studies have confirmed that the component of plantain, verbascoside, has the specificity of lowering uric acid. Its mechanism of reducing blood uric acid levels may be to inhibit the specificity of liver tyrosine deoxycholate (XOD) and reduce the mRNA expression of renal transport proteins Urat1 and Glut9. It is not difficult to see that plantain does have the pharmacological effect of lowering uric acid. The treatment of drug-induced uric acid reduction mainly includes two aspects: drugs that inhibit the conversion of blood uric acid (allopurinol tablets, febuxostat) and drugs that promote blood uric acid metabolism (benzbromarone). The medicinal value of plantain is exactly to inhibit the conversion of uric acid into drugs and promote the metabolism of uric acid. In other words, the ingredients in plantain have the same medicinal value as drugs.

1. Promoting the metabolism of blood uric acid by reducing the expression of renal mURAT1 mRNA is also one of the ways in which plantain extract can fully exert its anti-gout effect.

2. Adenosine deaminase ADA is one of the key enzymes in adenylate absorption metabolism and plays a key role in purine absorption metabolism. The latest research shows that the increase of ADA specificity will increase the concentration of tyrosine and hypoxanthine in the body, thereby affecting the metabolism of uric acid in the body. Plantain can reduce the production of tyrosine and hypoxanthine in the body by inhibiting the specificity of ADA, thereby reducing the conversion of uric acid in the body.

3. Serum creatinine level is a key factor in evaluating kidney function. Kidney damage causes creatinine metabolism obstruction, which in turn causes an increase in the body's creatinine level. Plantain extract can greatly reverse the damage to kidney function caused by hyperuricemia.

4. An increase in the specificity of adenosine deaminase ADA will cause cytotoxicity, while a decrease in its specificity can enhance the body's anti-infection ability. Therefore, on the one hand, plantain extract can inhibit XOD to produce specific oxygen free radicals and cause renal damage. On the other hand, it can inhibit the specificity of ADA to reduce the conversion of specific oxygen free radicals and ammonia, thereby reducing cytotoxicity and reducing renal cell damage, and finally improving renal function and promoting blood uric acid metabolism.

5. Flavonoids and polysaccharides have wide medicinal value. Some flavonoids and polysaccharides obtained from plants, such as rutin and quercetin, have the effect of lowering uric acid and show certain anti-gout effects. Plantain contains a lot of flavonoids and polysaccharides, which may be the components of its anti-gout effect, but further scientific research is needed.
