[Source] It is the root of the Cyperus rotundus, a plant of the Cyperaceae family. Collect roots in autumn and dry them in the sun.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 30 to 120 cm tall. The roots are fibrous and have a short rhizome. The stems are clustered and sharply triangular; the leaves are reduced to two leaf sheaths, growing at the base of the stems, membranous, brown, and obliquely truncated at the apex. Spikelets are ovate-oblong, 8-15 mm long, 4-6 mm wide, 3-20 fused into a lateral, solitary head inflorescence; bracts are triangular, an extension of the stem, 2-10 cm long; scales are ovate, light brown, about 4 mm long, mucronate at the apex, with ridges, and arranged in a shingle-like manner, with the lowest 1-2 empty, and the others having 1 bisexual flower, the top one atrophied, with 6 inferior bristles and barbs; 3 stamens; stigma 3-lobed. The nutlets are obovate or flat triangular, black and shiny when ripe. The heading period is July to August.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in swamps, river banks, streams and field edges. Distributed in Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi and other places.

[Properties and flavors] "Common Chinese Herbal Medicines in Sichuan": "Light, slightly bitter, cool."

【Function】 "Common Chinese Herbal Medicines in Sichuan": "clears heat and acts as a diuretic. Treats heat-related toothache, stranguria, and leucorrhea."

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 1 to 2 liang for fresh ones.
