[Source] Medicinal material source: the bark of the jujube tree of the Rhamnaceae family.

[Original form] Jujube is a deciduous shrub, rarely a small tree, 1-3m high. Old branches are gray-brown, young branches are green; there is a pair of thorns at the base of the branches, one of which is needle-shaped and upright, up to 3 cm long, and the other is curved downward, about 0.7 cm long. Simple leaves are alternate; stipules are needle-shaped; leaf blades are oblong-ovate to ovate-lanceolate, obtuse at apex, rounded at base, slightly oblique, and finely serrated at margin. The flowers are small, 2-3 clusters growing in leaf axils; the calyx is 5-lobed, the lobes are ovate-triangular; the petals are 5, yellow-green, alternate with the sepals, and the stamens are 5, opposite the petals; the disk is obvious, with 10 shallow lobes; the ovary is elliptical, buried in the disk, and the style is 2-lobed. The drupe is fleshy, nearly spherical, dark reddish brown when ripe, with a thin skin and a sour taste. The flowering period is June-July, and the fruiting period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows in sunny or dry slopes, valleys, hills, plains, roadsides and wastelands. It is drought-tolerant and often forms thickets.

[Usage and Dosage] For external use: grind appropriate amount into powder, sprinkle or apply; or soak in wine and apply; or boil in water and spray; or boil into ointment and apply. For internal use: decoction, 15-30g.

[Additional prescription] 1. To treat bloody stool: 1 liang of Chinese jujube root bark. Scrape off the black skin and dry it. Boil it with one bowl of water until it becomes one cup, and drink it while warm. If the condition persists, take another dose after seven days. (Tianjin Chinese Herbal Medicine) 2. Treat burns and scalds: 3 pounds of Chinese jujube root bark. Chop it into pieces, boil it in water into a paste, apply it on a clean cloth and stick it to the wound. To treat high blood pressure, dizziness and headache: One or two liang of Chinese jujube root (remove the outer black skin, remove the wood core, and use the inner skin).
