[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Urtica dioica, a plant of the Urticaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, about 1m tall. The stem is about 5mm thick, densely or sparsely covered with prickles and short soft hairs, and rarely branched. Simple leaves opposite; petiole 3-8cm long, sparsely or densely covered with prickles and short soft hairs; stipules 2 per node, connate, herbaceous, brown, oblong or broadly ovate-oblong, 10-15mm long, obtuse at apex, pubescent; leaf blade broadly ovate, rarely nearly cordate or triangular-ovate, 6-14cm long, 5-11cm wide, apex short acuminate, base cordate, margin with notched double teeth or with many regular small lobes, lobes nearly triangular, margin with several small teeth, sparsely covered with prickles and rough hairs above, sparsely or densely covered with prickles and short soft hairs or short coarse hairs below, stalactites dot-shaped; basal veins often 5, the upper pair of which extend to the middle edge. Monoecious; male inflorescences in the lower leaf axils, female inflorescences in the upper leaf axils; inflorescences conical, spreading, longer than petioles. The male flowers are almost sessile, with the reduced pistil disc-shaped and stalked; the female flowers are nearly sessile. Achenes are oblong-round, slightly flat, about 1 mm long, with inconspicuous fine warts. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown under valley forests at an altitude of 2000-3000m.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; pungent; warm; non-toxic

【Functions and indications】 Expel wind and dampness; promote blood circulation and relieve pain; detoxify. It is used to treat rheumatic pain, pain caused by overwork, hernia pain, infantile convulsions, vomiting of milk, postpartum weakness, edema, itchy skin, and snake bites.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount, decoct in water for washing; or mash and apply on the affected area.
