[Other name] Tuniuxi (Compendium of Materia Medica in Southern Yunnan).

[Source] It is the root of the Achyranthes bidentata plant of the Amaranthaceae family. Dig up in winter, remove the fibrous roots and reed heads, wash and dry.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The root is cylindrical and has a yellowish brown appearance. The stem is erect, quadrangular, with only longitudinal grooves, and covered with sparse soft hairs. The stem and leaves are red, and turn brown when dry. Simple leaves are opposite, elliptical or oblong-obovate, 2-10 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, with long pointed tip, cuneate or broad cuneate base, entire margin, densely pubescent on both sides; petiole 0.5-2 cm long. The spike inflorescence is axillary or terminal, with densely hairy pedicels and peduncle; small flowers; 1 bract, membranous, ovate; 2 bracteoles, curved and thorn-like, with ovate lobes on both sides of the base, and ciliate edges; tepals 3-veined; 5 stamens, the reduced stamens are eyelash-like; ovary superior. Utricle oblong.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in mountains and roadsides. Distributed in Yunnan, Hunan, Fujian and other places. Produced in Yunnan.

[Properties] The dry roots are oblong, slightly curved, multi-branched, up to 75 cm long and about 0.4 to 1.5 cm in diameter. The surface is gray-brown with obvious wrinkles and horizontal lines. It is not easy to break. The cross section is fibrous and brown-yellow. Odorless, slightly sweet taste. The best ones are those that are plump, oily, and brown-gray in appearance.
