[Source] It is the whole herb of the Asteraceae plant, Elaeagnus scabra . Harvest in late summer and sun-dried.

[Original morphology] Perennial erect herb, 30 to 60 cm tall. Sometimes covered with coarse, close-fitting white hair. The stem is dichotomously branched, with few, hard and rough branches. Most of the simple leaves are basal, spoon-shaped or oblong-oblanceolate, 5-15 cm long, 2-4.5 cm wide, gradually narrowed at the base, obtuse or short-pointed at the apex, and slightly serrated at the margins: the stem leaves are few and thin, with petioles 5-15 mm long, base enlarged and clasping, or nearly sessile. The capitula has about 4 florets, growing at the top of the branches; there are usually 3 leaf-like bracts, which are ovate or oblong-ovate, 1-1.5 cm long; there are multiple capitula in each bouquet, densely packed; the involucral bracts are 8-10 mm long; the receptacle is glabrous; the florets are all tubular, bisexual, lavender, 7-9 mm long, with 4 lobes at the apex, one side splitting, and the lobes slightly spreading; there are 4-5 stamens, slightly extending out of the tube; the ovary is inferior, with 1 chamber. Achenes are ridged, with 4 to 6 long hard spines on the top. Flowering period is from August to December. The fruiting period is from November to February of the following year.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in low grass in valleys, village edges, roadsides, wastelands, cultivated land, etc. Distributed in Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and other places. Produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and other places.

[Properties] The whole plant is dried, with a short and thick rhizome, 1 to 2 cm long, about 0.5 cm thick, densely covered with white hairs; the root leaves are mostly wrinkled, yellow-green, spoon-shaped or oblong-oblanceolate, sparsely covered with white long hairs, and slightly soft papery. The stem is cylindrical, 2 to 3 mm thick, often cut off, with a hollow cross section, and few and small stem leaves. Sometimes the stem end has a head inflorescence, and the corolla often falls off. The best ones are those with many leaves and no flowers.

[Chemical composition] The herb contains epididylinositol, lupulin alcohol, stigmasterol, triacontanol, triacontanol, and potassium chloride. It also contains lupulin acetate, deoxyhecoside and isodeoxyhecoside, and luteolin-7-glucoside has been isolated from its flowers.

[Pharmacological action] Antibacterial effect: The injection of Eleutherococcus elegans (made by decocting and concentrating the extract in water and then adding lead acetate to remove the precipitate) was used for in vitro antibacterial test (paper disc method, each paper disc contains about 30 mg of crude drug), which has antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Using the flat plate pouring method, when every 15 ml contains 18 to 24 grams of crude drug, it also has an antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae and Staphylococcus aureus.
