【English name】 Herb of Linearleaf Thitle

[Other names] Uncaria rhynchophylla, bitter board, bitter vegetable, Patrinia scabra, Patrinia scabra

[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Lactuca mongolica of the Asteraceae family.

[Original form] Lettuce is a perennial herb, 30-100cm tall. Stem branched. Leaves are alternate; lower leaves are oblong, gray-green, narrowed at the base, semi-amplexicaul, pinnate or inverted pinnately deeply or shallowly lobed, thick and slightly fleshy; leaves in the middle of the stem are the same shape as the lower leaves, but lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, undivided, and entire; upper leaves are entire and clasping the stem; sometimes all leaves are entire and undivided. There are many capitulums, with 20 small flowers, arranged in spreading panicles at the top of the stems and branches; the ligulate flowers are purple or lavender. Achenes are oblong and strip-shaped, flattened or not flattened, gray to black, without edges or with inconspicuous narrow edges, with 5-7 longitudinal ribs, the fruit neck gradually narrows, is longer, grayish white, and has white pappus.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Raw clay or sandy soil, often near rivers and lakes.

[Chemical composition] The above-ground flowering parts contain lactupicrin, lactucin, and α-amyrin[1].

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; slightly cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; cools blood and stops bleeding. It is used to treat summer heat, depression, body fluid sores, erysipelas, carbuncle, hemorrhoids, bleeding from trauma, and pain from injuries caused by falls.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 15-30g; or chew raw. For external use: take appropriate amount, mash and apply; or burn it into ash and apply; or boil it in water and wash with.
