[Original form] Euonymus japonicus is a shrub or small tree, 2-6m high. Leaves are opposite; petioles are stout, up to 1 cm long; leaf blades are leathery, narrowly elliptic or slightly narrowly obovate, 6-10 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, with narrow and gradually pointed tips, nearly entire margins or with shallow and fine teeth, and leaf veins are not very obvious. The cymes are short, with 2-3 flowers, densely growing at the top of new branches; the peduncle is up to 1 cm long; the flowers are yellow-green, about 4 mm in diameter, and 4 in number; the stamen filaments are extremely short, the anthers are nearly apical, and the disk is enlarged. The capsule flesh is red and deeply lobed into 4 parts. Often only 1-3 chambers grow into 1-3 lobes, which are ovate and each contains 1-2 seeds. The seeds are nearly black with red on the back and thick helmet-shaped aril.
