The basal leaves and lower stem leaves are petiolate, oblong-oblanceolate, obtuse at the apex with a slightly convex head, and narrow at the base; the upper leaves are sessile, lanceolate, and acute. The scorpion tail inflorescence is at the top of the stem; the flowers are purple-red and then turn blue; the sepals remain after flowering; the corolla is about 5 mm in diameter, the petals are round-headed and have scales at the base; there are 5 stamens, which are short and inserted in the middle of the corolla tube. The nutlets are obovate, 6 mm long, densely covered with short hooked spines, the tips of which are small anchor-shaped. Flowering period is from May to August.
