The efficacy and function of Jiuniuli

[Other names] Chuan Tai, Tu Di Xie

[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of Smilax china, a plant of the Liliaceae family.

[Original form] Smilax glabra is a climbing shrub. Stems usually sparsely prickly. Leaves are alternate; petioles are 2-3.5cm long, with ear-shaped sheaths on both sides of the base, with tendrils, the shedding point is located near the middle, the sheaths are folded outward or nearly erect, and clasping the stem in a penelopean manner; leaves are leathery, ovate or elliptical, 9-20cm long, 4.5-15cm wide, with short acuminate tip, base broadly cuneate to shallowly cordate, and light green underneath. Umbels 10-30 arranged in panicles, 5-17cm long, inflorescence axis more or less flexuous, umbels 2-3 clustered or nearly whorled on axis; flowers unisexual, dioecious; tepals 6, yellowish green; outer tepals of male flowers linear, inner tepals lanceolate, much wider at base than at top, 6 stamens, completely free, about 5mm long, anther linear, about 2mm long, female flowers nearly as large as male flowers, with 3 reduced stamens, 3-chambered ovary, 3-lobed stigma. The berries are spherical, 4-6mm in diameter. The flowering period is April and the fruiting period is October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in forests or under bushes below 1500m above sea level.
