[Alias] Iron water chestnut, Fanbatuo, Lengfanba (Commonly Used Chinese Herbal Medicines in Sichuan).

[Source] It is the rhizome and young leaves of the Liliaceae plant Smilax glabra . The rhizomes can be harvested throughout the year, and the leaves are harvested in spring and sun-dried.

[Original form] Deciduous vine-like shrub. The rhizome is tuberous, mostly horizontal, with enlarged and hard woody diamond-shaped protrusions, a hard rootlet at the tip, grayish white with light yellow on the outside, and light red in cross section. The stem is hard, with inverted or parallel hard prickles. Leaves are alternate, leathery; leaf blades are oblong to narrowly oblong, or ovate, 3.5-8 cm long, 1.8-4.5 cm wide, acuminate or obtuse at apex, broadly cuneate at base, entire, green and shiny above, pink-white below, with 3 veins; petiole 1-1.2 cm long; sheathed at base, with 2 tendrils at top of sheath. Umbels are axillary; unisexual, dioecious; pedicel 1.5-2 cm long, pedicel 1-1.4 cm long; male tepals 6, light green-yellow, oblong, stamens 6; female flowers 4 mm long, with 6 staminodes, ovary superior, oblong; stigmas 3, recurved. The berries are spherical, blue-black, and about 7 mm in diameter. Flowering period is April. Fruiting period is July to August.

[Habitat distribution] Growing under forests on hillsides or in shrub forests. Distributed in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Henan and Shaanxi.

[Chemical composition] The root contains 55.8% starch, 5.56% crude protein and 0.22% crude fat.

[Properties and flavors] "Common Chinese Herbal Medicines in Sichuan": "sweet, neutral."

[Functions and indications] "Common Chinese Herbal Medicines in Sichuan": "clears away heat and removes wind poison. Treats metrorrhagia, hematuria, scrofula, and traumatic injuries. Young leaves: treat ecthyma."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 0.5-1 liang; or soaked in wine. For external use: mash and apply.
