[Original morphology] Annual herb, 8-20 cm high, loose, much branched, bald or slightly sparsely hairy, leaves opposite, with short petioles; leaf blades ovate, 8-15 mm long, obtuse or mucronate at the apex. Base broadly cuneate or rounded, with very sparse serrations. Flowers are axillary, or in racemes at the top; pedicel 1-3 cm long; calyx 5-lobed, green or lavender, membranous, with 5 veins, lobes short-pointed; corolla tube cylindrical, about 8 mm long, 2-lipped, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, with 4 purple stamens; ovary superior. The capsule is oblong or ovate and hidden in the persistent calyx. Flowering period is July.

[Habitat distribution] Grown by ditches and in paddy fields. Distributed in southern my country.

[Properties and flavors] Guangzhou Army's "Handbook of Commonly Used Chinese Herbal Medicines": "slightly bitter, light, and cool."

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, removes dampness and detoxifies. Treat colds, acute and chronic bacillary dysentery, enteritis, carbuncles, furuncles and boils.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 1-3 qian (1-2 liang for fresh); grind into powder or soak in wine. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of acute diarrhea or fever: stir-fry one liang of motherwort, five qian of licorice, appropriate amounts of purslane and old tea leaves, and decoct them for oral administration. (Lushan Chinese Herbal Medicine)
